Moving up from the LA area, many parents have the impression that Magic Mountain has become solely a teen destination, and sometimes not even a safe one.

But did you know that Magic Mountain has worked very hard to make positive change, catering to families with young children as well as the thrill-seeking older ones? And, Magic Mountain actually has more rides for the 42" crowd than even Disneyland!

Give us your honest opinion... is Magic Mountain on your list of great family entertainment? Why or why not?

I am so surprised to learn that they have so many rides for kids 42". We spend $ on annual passes to D-land every year, but not M Mountain. In fact, I have never taken my kids there in the 5 years we've been here. (I know, crazy!) My impression: too expensive and not enough options for little guys. But now, I'll take a second look.
Last summer I took my 6 yr. old daughter there with a few other friends. She received a free ticket & I got in for only $25. We had a great time & I was surprised on what there is for her age to do. She went on every "kiddie" ride & even went on Ninja which I was surprised that she was able to go on & she LOVED it! We didn't go on any other roller coasters that day but she probably would've been able to go on a few more of the "calm" ones.

It was my first time going in over 15 yrs. that day. When I used to go when I was a teen it was a scary place to go, lots of gangs, shootings in the parking lot, etc. I would go with a bunch of friends & have our parents pick us up before dark. It has definitely changed & is more family oriented.

My husband took some family from England there the day after xmas & it was DEAD! Everything was about a 10 min. wait. We'll definitely go again!
I am getting passes this year as they are much more reasonable then D-land. You can get both parks for a great deal and it comes with a coupon book to get friends in for free and discounts. I did not have one this year but my friend took me and the kids with her coupons and what a deal. I just went to D-land and the drive and crowds so turned me off, as well my kids are getting bigger and preferred the fast rides there only. When I went to MM in June once I was relatively surprised that it was not too busy, when you think it might be.

The sole fact that its 10 minutes away is definitely a plus for me.....and D-land is just to expensive. My friends went and it was so crazy they only got on 4 rides that they upgraded to a pass just to make it worthy. My 5 year old loves Ninja and Jet Stream. You would be surprised at how many rides the kids can get on, and the little kiddie area is always not packed when I have been there.

My last input is that you can always just go for a couple hours since its so close.

Think about a SCVMoms Blog day.....
We're already on it, Louise! :)

I haven't been there for 8 years. Honestly, the prices have deterred me, especially since I had my kids. Rumors of gangs & graffiti have also kept me away.

I have heard that they have since made it easier (& safer) for families, so I have been considering taking a trip there, especially since I now get a great price with my 25Score card!
I grew up in Orange County about 15 minutes away from Disneyland. It brings so may fond memories for me that it will always be a special place. Now that I have children I go as often as I can. The drive is horrible but so worth it once you finally get there!

I am also a big chicken and don't like rides that spin so I have never really been into Magic Mountain. We have been a handful of times since we moved here in 2004. Honestly, it's just not that great for young children. The kiddie rides are shaky and not much better than the carnival. It's horribly filthy. Have you ever looked at their trash cans? The bathrooms often have pools water on the floor. I've never used Purell so much in one theme park trip. In fact both of my kids came down with the Swine Flu shortly after the visit this October.

I enjoy the Disney theme. The parades. The great food and shopping. Magic Mountain is fine for a few hours but I'd still rather make the trip to Disneyland. I wish it was different. I would much rather spend my time in Valencia than driving south down the 5!

Sorry for the rant. I guess I'm just a Disney snob.
We love Magic Mountain and take our kids there quite frequently. If you have playpasses or buy your tickets online (only $29.99 online) it is not that much more than spending the day at the movies. Our oldest son often goes with his friends and we parents take turns with drop off and pick up. We've never encountered any of the problems I've heard about over the years. We also leave when it gets dark :)
Also, December is a great time to go because it is the off season and we pretty much just walk onto the rides and even the very popular ones (X2, Tatsoo) have a reasonable wait time.

I LOVE Magic Mountain! We're recent transplants to the SCV and had never heard about the seedy reputation MM had developed - my memories were of driving down here as a teenager and having a great time. I started buying season passes in 2006 and went non-stop for two years; when I was working as a freelancer I would go to the park and ride a ride or two before driving down into LA for work, and we'd spend weekends there with Evan who loved the kids area. I've never seen it any messier than any other theme park, including Disneyland, and certainly not like a carnival. Most of the kiddie rides will accommodate adults as well as kids, and I've ridden with Evan on most of them over the years. The new Thomas Land is really neat too, although by the time it opened Evan had outgrown the kiddie land.

Evan started riding Ninja at 4 years old, right after he hit 42", and loved it - since then he's been a thrill ride junkie and rides the fastest of anything he can handle. There are a ton of great rides for kids who have outgrown the kiddie land but aren't ready for the big coasters yet, including Log Jammer, Jet Stream, Buccaneer, Grinder Gearworks, the Scrambler, the Bumper Cars, and more. Yes, some of those are carnival style rides, but that's because the Midway section was a part of the history of Magic Mountain - it wasn't always the thrill ride capital that it is now.

I think with the proximity to the SCV, and the fantastic pricing (I can take my entire family there for less than the price of ONE of us at Disney) Magic Mountain is a really great value! We get one Extreme season pass for $125, which comes with free parking & 20% off on food & merchandise, and regular season passes at $60 for the rest. Very reasonable, with no blackout dates at all, and there are occasionally special functions available only to season pass holders, including exclusive ride dates on new rides when they open.

And I swear I don't work there - I just love the park! LOL
I do not let my kids go without an adult at the park especially at night. Some think I am over protective but I just dont have a good feeling about the park and the element it attracts. My kids are 12 and 15 and I just dont feel they are completely safe there. I think I just have to go with my gut.
Wow, after reading the responses, it makes me want to "rediscover" MM. I went several years ago and it was very "ghetto" with alot of gangsters hanging out...not going on rides. Security is pretty good though, lots of SCV officers.
